Special Worship Services

Providence-Presbyterian-Church-Christmas
(In order of the Liturgical Year)

  • Children’s Christmas Pageant

Begin Advent season with an annual Providence favorite. The Children’s Christmas Program is a proven delight which includes a cast of Biblical characters and livestock. Please come and hear the PPC children tell the story of Jesus’ birth, and then stay for a cookie party afterwards.

Christmas Pageant in the Sanctuary featuring an array of angels, livestock, wise men & women and of course, Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus

  • Blue Christmas Service

  • During the Advent season, we proclaim and celebrate that Jesus is the light of the world. As people of faith, we anticipate the coming of Jesus’ light into the world, but we also know that there is darkness in the world and in our lives. Christmas is a difficult time for people who are grieving and hurting. The Blue Christmas worship service is a time to acknowledge the dark places in our lives and to look forward together to Christ’s coming light.

  • Ash Wednesday Service

  • Marks the beginning of Lent

Lent is the 40-day season beginning on Ash Wednesday, during which we prepare ourselves for the events of Holy Week. This is that last week of Jesus’ earthly life which begs for preparation so we don’t miss what God is doing when Jesus enters Jerusalem, celebrates the Passover with his disciples, is arrested, convicted, crucified—and then on the third day, is risen. What is going on? How do we prepare for THAT?  Prayer, fasting, alms-giving, reflection are four classical ways to do so.  Join us on Ash Wednesday to prepare ourselves for the season of Lent.

  • Maundy Thursday

  • Make the beginning of the Easter Triduum (Three Days)
This is liturgical service recalling Jesus’ last supper with his disciples and the “love command” that he leaves with them. We too will share in a simple meal and celebrate the Lord’s Supper around our tables.

  • Tenebrae/Good Friday

  • This is a service of darkness; we hear the story of Jesus’ death spoken and sung. Please click here for the scripture readings and musical anthems that were the 2016 Tenebrae service.

  • Easter Sunday

  • Easter Sunrise Service (weather permitting)
Start celebrating the Resurrection very early Sunday morning at the Sunrise Service (7:00 am) in the courtyard where the sun rises behind the Pastors as they lead us through worship. This early morning service is followed by a delicious, hearty breakfast prepared by the Men of Providence.

    Worship on Easter Sunday
Alleluia! Come worship the Risen Lord! Easter Sunday is joyful and joy-filled. Come and celebrate: “He is Risen!”

  • Homecoming Sunday (first Sunday in May)

  • Worship on this special Sunday, which is always the first Sunday in May, guarantees you’ll hear some stories about this Church’s rich history and some really special music provided by musically talented members of the congregation. The 11:15 am worship is followed up by lunch under the oaks with delicious food prepared by our congregation and delightful fellowship. Come, enjoy and bring a dish to share.

  • Youth Sunday (May)

  • Youth Sunday
In May, the youth of PPC take on the worship services providing scripture readings, prayers, stories, sermons and music.  This is one of PPC’s most anticipated services each year.

The Christian Year and the Liturgical Calendar

The Christian calendar is marked by festivals and seasons that provide a way to order the annual life of the church based on Christ's life and events in salvation history.

The PC (USA) Book of Order offers this explanation and overview of the liturgical year:

"God’s work of redemption in Jesus Christ offers the Church a central pattern for ordering worship in relationship to significant occasions in the life of Jesus and of the people of God. The Church thus has come to observe the following days and seasons:

Advent:  A season to recollect the hope of the coming of Christ, and to look forward to the Lord’s coming again,

Christmas:  A celebration of the birth of Christ,

Epiphany:  A day for commemorating God’s self-manifestation to all people,

Lent:  A season of spiritual discipline and preparation, beginning with Ash Wednesday, anticipating the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ,

Holy Week:  A time of remembrance and proclamation of the atoning suffering and death of Jesus Christ,

Easter:  The day of the Lord’s resurrection and the season of rejoicing which commemorates his ministry until his Ascension, and continues through

The Day of Pentecost:  The celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.

The church also observes other days such as Baptism of the Lord, Transfiguration of the Lord, Trinity Sunday, All Saints Day and Christ the King. (W-3.2002)
