Historic Providence Presbyterian Church (1767) in Charlotte, North Carolina, acknowledges and remembers our African-American sisters and brothers – enslaved members buried in the cemetery through the reading of names and remembering those known and unknown. Blind Willie Johnson (1897-1945) was an gospel blues slide guitarist, singer and songwriter in the African-American tradition. He recorded for Columbia Records from 1927 to 1930. His plaintive instrumental “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” was recorded in 1928 and is included in many archival collections of essential American recorded music.
